Behind the Scenes
Sharon Betters
I experienced the power of biblical encouragement in a unique way when I battled Stage 3 breast cancer and even more so, after the death of our sixteen-year-old son, Mark. As the cloud of grief slowly lifted, I wanted other women to experience the same kind of help and hope that came to me through the power of biblical encouragement.  I experienced women living out a lifestyle of sharing with me what God had worked within them. However, human encouragement could only take me so far.
In the aftermath of death, when God’s promises of sufficiency, joy, and peace seemed far away and impossible for Him to keep in the aftermath of death’s defilement, I found hope in Isaiah 45:2-3:
Mark
I will go before you and will level the mountains; I will break down gates of bronze and cut through bars of iron.  I will give you the treasures of darkness, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the Lord, the God of Israel, who summons you by name.
And I found comfort in Lamentations 3:22-23:
His compassions never fail.  They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
The healing balm of encouragement eventually stopped the spread of despair’s infection and began replacing it with hope’s healthy glow.  God’s Word was the healing balm, and God’s people applied it lavishly to soothe the searing pain in my soul.
Biblical encouragement is soul work.  God unleashes its mysterious power every time a child of God follows the Holy Spirit’s direction and steps into the suffering of another person.  Individuals, families and churches need it regularly to maintain spiritual health. And both the encouraged and the encourager are changed through its application.  Scriptural encouragers invest in their own spiritual welfare every time they give of themselves to another.
Encouragement can be as simple as smiling warmly at an awkward adolescent or as complex as walking through the valley of death with a disease-ravaged friend.  Its power is limitless and its practice is a privilege.  When Christ is in us, we have the treasures of His encouragement at our fingertips.  As our joy in knowing Jesus grows, God calls us to do soul work as we become His promise keepers – the ones who become His arms, hands, feet, His hugs, counsel and comfort to those in our “villages.”  We have the privilege of giving to others from the treasure chest of our salvation.
When I spoke on the topic of encouragement, women often expressed a heart’s desire to connect with others through biblical encouragement and longed for a “recipe” on how to encourage. I knew this kind of life-giving encouragement was more than a to do list. I also believed that our churches could be strengthened and become magnets to unbelievers through the practice of biblical encouragement. Through circumstances only God could orchestrate I wrote Treasures of Encouragement, Women Helping Women to help equip, energize and enable women to experience an authentic relationship to Jesus that flows out in joyful encouragement, that helps turns hearts toward our God.  This blog reinforces the twelve Encouragement Principles in the book through real life stories of how God continues to send me treasures in the darkness, practical encouragement ideas, and scriptural truths that encourage readers to experience, really experience intimacy with Jesus that cultivates joy and freedom in relationships and every day life.

My Family

I married adventure when I married Chuck Betters! Never a dull moment and especially now with our 14 wonderful grands and their parents.  Family gatherings reflect Chuck’s Lebanese roots and they are typically loud, chaotic, include lots of great food and full of laughter and sometimes heated discussions.  I love this family more than they will ever know. God is keeping His promises of Psalm 30.  Every day life with this brood gives me lots of writing material!
I'm also one of 7 children and enjoy reunions with over 100 extended family members every summer.

About Me
Every season of life brings new challenges and I'm still learning that every relationship is a sand paper opportunity.Every mess up along the way is an opportunity to experience grace upon grace.  I am committed to walking by faith in the love of Jesus, even if that means wrestling with God to reconcile His sovereignty and love when the lights in life go out.  And I'm committed to using every opportunity to call back to those coming behind me that God is sovereign and we can trust Him.

I love interacting with younger women just starting out in creating their own legacies because they are so hungry for truth and how to “do it right”

I love Women's Ministry, writing for fun and laughing until tears run down my cheeks when my 4 sisters and I get together.
I’m a would be gardener that starts the season full of visions of fresh produce and often ends the summer with weeds taller than the tomato cages.

Favorite past times include just being with my husband, doesn’t matter where,  cousins overnights, and sitting on the beach with a good book, surrounded by lots of grandchildren and family.Bottom of Form
