Declaring His Mighty Acts

TODAY’S TREASURE

Remember. This word occurs often in Scripture as God wants His people to keep pointing future generations to His saving power and mercy. Psalm 78 is another place in Scripture where we are exhorted to:

Tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and His might, and the wonders that He has done.

Exodus 12 recounts the first Passover. In verses 26 and 27, we see Moses teach the Israelites exactly how to help their children remember God's great rescue of His people. They were not just to model obedience to the Lord by celebrating the Passover feast. They were to tell the children the reason for the feast. Succeeding generations worshiped at this recounting.

Are you recounting God's faithfulness to you? We can look for ways to praise the Lord in our hearts and minds, but also as we share God's wondrous works in our lives with the next generation. If you've got children or grandchildren, write down the stories. Tell the stories where God showed up for you. Are there children in your church? Relate to them the stories of Scripture as you weave in stories from your own life. Show how one Scripture passage reminds you of another and even helps you understand it better. Our great God is the same throughout all generations!

Charles Spurgeon wrote in his commentary on the Psalms, "It is the occupation of every true believer to rehearse the great doings of his great God." I love that word, rehearse. To rehearse means to practice again and again. That is what the Israelites did when they celebrated the Passover year after year. We rehearse the great doings of our God as we gather in corporate worship each week.

LIFE-GIVING ENCOURAGEMENT

Remember and rehearse God's abundant goodness with others around you. Your friends, your family, and the future generations need to hear you remember and rehearse. Sing aloud of God's righteousness. Don't be shy about it. Speak of the might of God's awesome deeds and declare His greatness.
