The Mind of Christ in a Me-First World
What does it mean to think like Christ in a self-focused world? Philippians 2:5 calls us to adopt the mindset of Jesus, choosing humility, unity, and surrender in everyday life.
A Call to a Christlike Mindset
Sometimes we read a verse like Philippians 2:5 and nod as if Paul has just suggested a nice spiritual accessory — something we might add to our lives if we have time. But Paul is not offering a suggestion. He is issuing a call. “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5). That word, “attitude,” could also be translated as mindset. How you think, interpret people, or respond when you feel overlooked. How you handle conflict or live when life is hard.
Unity Begins Before Verse 5
We cannot separate verse 5 from what comes right before it. In Philippians 2:1–4, Paul pleads for unity: “being like-minded… having the same love… doing nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit… in humility valuing others above yourselves” (Philippians 2:2–3). Then he says, in effect, here is how you get there - look at Jesus.
The Philippian church was made up of women and men who would not naturally share a table, let alone share a church. Acts 16 gives us that unforgettable snapshot: Lydia, a wealthy businesswoman; a slave girl delivered from demonic oppression; and a Roman jailer, a working man tied to the empire’s system (Acts 16:11–34). Rich and poor, powerful and powerless — different stories, different wounds, different social “ranking.” If you want a recipe for division, this is it.
Yet Paul says, no! In Christ, you are one. Unity is not a cute church word. It is a gospel witness. Jesus Himself prayed for it: “that they may be one… so that the world may believe that you have sent me” (John 17:21). Our unity is meant to make the invisible gospel visible.
The Cost of Unity
But unity is expensive. It costs our pride and insisting on our own way. It costs the right to cling to our “status” — real or imagined. That’s why Paul brings us to Jesus, because no one ever laid down status like Christ did.
Philippians 2:6 says Jesus was “in very nature God” and yet “did not consider equality with God something to be grasped.” He did not cling to His rights or demand to be treated as He deserved. He did not use His position to crush sinners. Instead, He moved toward us.
Friends, if we want joy in hard places, we must start here: the mind of Christ is not a mood. It is a deliberate choice, empowered by the Spirit. On hard days, you may not feel humble. You may feel tired, threatened, and very justified. But the call still stands: Choose the mindset of Christ.
So ask yourself honestly: What am I grasping today? Approval? Control? Being right? Being recognized? Having the last word? If you can name it, you can bring it into the light. And then you can pray, “Lord Jesus, give me Your mind right here.”
Christ Supplies What He Commands
The beautiful truth is this: Christ does not command what He will not supply. If you belong to Him, you are not trying to imitate Jesus on your own strength. The Holy Spirit is forming Christ in you (John 14:26; Galatians 4:19). One small act of humility, one prayerful pause before reacting, one decision to listen instead of defend, becomes a Spirit-powered step toward unity.
And unity is not only for the church meeting. Unity is for the kitchen, the group text, the ministry team, the marriage conversation, the moment you want to withdraw or punish with silence. The mind of Christ enters ordinary life and makes it holy.
LIFE-GIVING ENCOURAGEMENT
• Identify one relationship where unity feels hard right now. Pray Philippians 2:5 over it: “Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus”.
• Replace one “me-first” thought with a gospel thought: Christ did not grasp; He gave.
• Take one concrete step: send a note, make a call, speak gently, apologize quickly.
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, You know how quickly my heart grasps for control, approval, and being right. Forgive me. Give me Your mind today. Make me a woman who pursues unity because You pursued me. By Your Spirit, teach me to lay down pride and to value others in love. For Your glory, amen.
