I feel like the Church Is Alienating My Son!

In this episode Dr. Betters answers the question, "You mention the rebellious son is left to the “loving care of the elders” in church discipline. Our son, 6th of 8 otherwise God-fearing adults, was living with a young woman (whom he has now married and has a son). He would not come before the church to repent, so he was excommunicated from fellowship with the church through church discipline. Our family still interacts with his family, and they can attend church if they choose to (they have moved away). What confuses me is “the loving care of the elders.” Our son-in-law, an elder in our church, has decided to not be in the same place as our son unless it is an “all-family” event due to the church discipline. It feels as if our son is being pushed further away from God with no one, with the exception of some family members, reaching out to him anymore. Is this how church discipline is supposed to work?"
